Stitch Liveshow – Episode 1

Image Copyright Disney, the disney-dj stitch is no more, so i took some liberty here...

To celebrate the glorious upgrade of my dj skills, I started the Stitch Liveshow; A (bi-)weekly show that will contain about one hour of music. This first episode contains my favorite Drum & Bass releases from past weeks. Since the tracks are selected according to my likings, its actually Drum & Bass & Melodies. Enjoy the great tracks, and the decent mixing. I actually felt the vibe halfway of the mix… can’t wait for the new one! Enjoy!

Total playing time: 1.18.14 (and yes, it even fits on cd!)

RTL7: Cheap criticism towards ProRail

Screen shot 2009-12-22 at 16.10.48

Ow wow, there is some snow in the Netherlands! Whoohoo! Snow! The thing we missed in its current glorious proportions. Unfortunately, snow brings also some inconveniences; plans get ruined since roads are danger zones and rail fails.

National news channels are first-posting each other with the increasing amount of broken trains and tracks. They build a scenery of an entire country disappointed and angry at the train service. RTL 7 says “Criticism towards prorail increases”. Then you see people complaining, such as a guy from traveler organization Rover; “It’s very bad, the first day is okey, but this is unacceptable“; or something along those lines.

Critique?

Now RTL 7 is the one claiming the critique is rising; but shows no evidence. We hear an opinion of a guy with big words and see some disappointed travelers; thats all. This is called “Complaining“; especially the content of Rover.

Critique has some foundation and can be used to build on. An example of constructive criticism: “The elevators on the station are broken; they should be fixed. In the meantime we should just try to help each other out. Maybe the NS should help out with extra personnel aside from the ones that provide information and security.

RTL 7 is also complaining about the lack of traveling information and the fogginess of this information. My visit to the station today was the most clarifying one yet. Here is why: 1: NS attendants walk around to answer the same questions over and over again. 2: Intercoms continuously tell what trains leave at what tracks. 3: Travelers also get information of why their train doesn’t leave; and what is broken. And there is abundant information on the Internet; 4: The NS website informs about the trains that don’t leave. 5: The site advices to not travel by train. Missing out all these sources is incredibly hard, but possible. In this case: put some effort in it and look for it!

My experience

My personal experience of traveling by train saturday, today and yesterday is positive. The service level at stations is good; travelers even get free coffee and tea (and cappuccino!). Last night I couldn’t return home; a malfunctioning track blocked all traffic between Arnhem and Zutphen. This has been fixed last night. Think about this; people getting up in the middle of the night, in freezing cold, to fix a railroad track! Especially for me! That’s just awesome!

The atmosphere on the stations was very friendly. People are unionized, bonding, and possibly yesterday night has been the start of a few new relationships. There was no air of complaint or something like that, but there was some slight confusion about the train schedule; nothing worth mentioning on a national newscast.

Conclusion

There is something positive about this “critique”! If the common consensus tells prorail should better their service, they would likely get the means to do so! In this sense bad coverage is good for politics! So, please complain more! Maybe this could even expand our export of railway systems abroad!

All in all: RTL 7’s news item about the trains in this snowy weather is sensational, flat and cheap. The only value was in the comment of the prorail speaker. “We could choose to cancel all trains, or have a light service; we chose the latter“.

Enjoy your trip, and look outside: SNOW!

Eth0 Golden Ticket

In 2010, on 16/17 January, there will be the Eth0:2010 Winter edition. Eth0 is a socially oriented gathering of friendly geeks, girls and technology in the outer regions of the Netherlands. See link at the bottom for more info.

I just purchased a ticket. Due to some awesomeness in my head, i’ve got Eric Cartman screaming around with the text “i’ve got a golden ticket, i’ve got a golden ticket”. So I decided to pimp up the ticket; with a subtle gold touch. In the end everything was gold-plated to give it that extra feel. Shoop da woop.

Lottery tickets

Time to buy some lottery tickets. But which one to buy? In case you’re wondering, I bought all of them. Thats right: I bought from each lottery exactly one ticket. This resulted in small stack of paper, promising a chance of beautiful (and not so beautiful prizes). What does a lottery ticket mean? How big are the chances of winning? And what tickets should you buy? Here is your chance to find out.

titelfoto

Looks

The value of a lottery ticket is reflected in the design and paper-size. More expensive tickets use more paper and look prettier. In this case the most appealing one is the Half-a-million ticket. This one uses holographic reflecting diamonds; giving the paper the feel of being something more valuable then just paper. Other appealing tickets are 40×1.000.000 but most noticeably the December calendar; which is in the style of an advent calendar. The gallery below are the actual tickets I bought in November.

Jackpots

Suppose I’m a lucky man… The chance of that happening isn’t one to speak of, but my greed and imagination does wish to think it happens. In case all tickets are winning ones, the sum of money would be 1.927.000 euros from Krasloten and 27.5 million from Staatsloterij.

Name Brand Cost Max prize Net/Gross Chance to Win
Klavertje 4 Krasloten 1 25.000 Net 20.48%
7 Klapper Krasloten 1.50 50.000 Net 21.97%
E20 Cash Krasloten 2 2.000 Net 20.64%
Flappen Krassen Krasloten 2 50.000 Net 22.83%
Mega Cash Krasloten 5 100.000 Net 25.20%
100 BMW Krasloten 5 100.000 Net 25.01%
December Kalender Krasloten 5 100.000 Net 50.20%
Half Miljoen Netto Krasloten 10 500.000 Net 29.35%
40 x 1.000.000 Krasloten 10 1.000.000 Gross 25.68%
Staatslot State lottery 15 27.5 million Net ?????

But okey, let’s be realistic. Winning is nice, but that doesn’t make it profitable; is there any chance of gaining some profit?

Calculations

Dutch lottery companies are required to publish the prize-schemes and all associated data to the public. So, what is the chance of winning something that is of higher value than the ticket itself? I call this the “Chance of Profit”. Another valuable number is the “Change of Jackpot”; this is the percentage of winning the jackpot. Since the odds are so small, the more commercial value “Tickets per Jackpot” is added. The state lottery is very obscure about its numbers unfortunately; it does however publish its balance sheet.

Name Tickets Produced Chance of Profit Change of Jackpot Tickets per Jackpot
Klavertje 4 9.840.000 7.98% 0.0000508% 1.968.000

* Total number of tickets for the new-years lottery is 34.2 * 100.000. Other complexities such as 1/5th tickets might or might not be part of that number. The chance to win depends on sales. This article uses a sales percentage of 100%.

So, with this knowledge in the back of my head, it’s time to start scratching. Scratch scratch…

Scratchy

Before my thumbs started to bleed I found a guilder (dutch coin) for scratching. In total I won €10 on the half-a-million and a free ticket on a 7-klapper.

Conclusion

A few years ago i dreamt that when I had a lottery, I would massively increase the chance of winning a substantial amount of money. This day has happened with the introduction of the 40 x 1.000.000! This one has the highest chance of passing the magical boundary of becoming a ‘millionaire’. Even though the actual prize is 710.000, it’s still the best chance to win a substantial amount of money.

The most exciting lot to open was the Mega Cash; it has the most numbers to look for and a lot of rows that could contain your winning number. Scratching them open without revealing the prize also increases the tension. For the amount of play value, this is the best one. This one also has the highest percentage of profit.

While the chance to win a lot of money on the 40 x 1.000.000 is high, its also a very dull ticket. There is only one area to scratch open; this reveals a code. Checking this code requires a wait, a recent newspaper or an internet connection. Inside the document with the winning numbers is a short list with just 10 numbers; its easy. The ticket also provides an extra game, which is a cheap knockoff in comparison to winning a million. Given that this is the highest chance to win such an amount its still fair.

The smaller tickets, as the BMW ticket, disappointed. The smaller ones do provide a quick fix, but don’t deliver the tension/price ratio Mega Cash does. The BMW ticket is something you buy if you need a BMW (a 33.325 value); it has limited numbers (half of mega cash) and an extra game. The BMW ticket has the poorest profit chance, and I just don’t like the car.

Disclaimer

Warning: The numbers in this article have been manually taken from the original documents and may contain errors. For any factual numbering, review the krasloten/state lottery website. The state lottery has been contacted about the amount of prizes in their November 2009 lottery, if this mail gets response i’ll change this article accordingly. Dayzers and lotto have been omitted in this test; this only focusses on instant lottery and state lottery.

Stitch – NLC Summer Mix 3

This is something I mixed in 2003, my third mix ever. See below for the story and playlist. Enjoy.

Story

In 2003 I started practicing with digital mixing. Since I didn’t know that there where specific apps like Acid and Logic I used Amadeus II to do the work. This app is similar to Cooledit/Audacity. It is only possible to perform destructive audio editing; thus manipulating sound directly. Pitching songs to the right tempo was a pain; I developed a formula to perform quicker beat-matching but still it would take some time to get it right. Transitions where build by copy-paste tracks over each other, sometimes with some fade-ins and fade-outs. Although mixing is possible, it is not possible to go back and change parts of the mix. With an undo space of 30 edits the rule was simple; once pasted, cannot change it.

It might sound outdated; the computer used for mixing was an iMac DV 400 mhz, with a 13 gigabyte harddrive. The tracks where taken from my CD collection, specifically from the Turn up the Bass cd’s. To speed up working the audio was in aiff, but the resulting mp3 was of low quality. As you might notice, all tracks have a nice party atmosphere; but it’s a poorly built set. That being said; its a fairly decent mix and if you’re a fan of hiphouse and the sounds from the good old days you’ll probably appreciate it.

Since editing and mixing took so long, the mix was never finished.

In 2003 I started practicing with digital mixing. In those days i didn’t knew about software like Acid and Logic. This was the third mix I made, and was mixed using Amadeus II; a destructive audio editing app for manipulating sound directly. The songs where pitched manually by a formula for manually pitching up/down songs, fitting them to the 4-bar speed of the target mix. I created my own formula for doing this, but still it would take some time to get it right. The tracks are copy-pasted over eachother, with a limited undo space of 30 edits; once pasted, you cannot change it.
The computer used for mixing was an iMac DV 400 mhz, with a 13 gigabyte harddrive. The tracks where taken from the Turn up the Bass series. There is not much set-building and most of it is mixed using copy-paste transitions. If you’re a fan of hiphouse and the sounds from the good old days you’ll probably can appreciate this mix.
Before you start to wonder; the mix was never finished due to the time it took to mix things together.

Server maintenance… [update]

This site has just been moved from an unreliable hosting party to a reliable one. In the process the server software changed from Slackware 12.1/Apache to Debian/Lighttpd. The transition was not easy, as there are some quirks that have to be overcome. If you are also moving to Lighty from Apache, here are some very useful instructions and URL’s to help you out.

Note: since i’m a total linux noob i cannot help you with specific issues. Also: these commands might not be optimal if you want a secure server.

Installing lighttpd with WP-Supercache and a working upgrading system

  1. Install lighttpd with lua:
    1. apt-get install lighttpd-mod-magnet
    2. lighty-enable-mod magnet
    3. URL: http://www.howtoforge.com/installing-drupal-6.4-on-a-lighttpd-webserver-debian-etch
  2. Now get WP-Supercache and WordPress redirects working:
    1. You need to create and edit a .lua file
    2. Details: http://tempe.st/2008/04/lighttpd-and-wp-supercache-now-you-can/
  3. To get the WP-Update system working (you need an ftp server thingy):
    1. Create an RSA Key / Certificate thing
    2. Follow: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=707161
    3. or follow: http://www.akadia.com/services/ssh_test_certificate.html
    4. Place the keys in the right directory (with “mv” source target)
    5. Then do this: http://praveen.kumar.in/2009/05/31/setting-up-ftps-using-vsftpd-for-wordpress-plugins-auto-upgrade/
  4. Add a user to the system for FTP usage
    1. Only needed when you have no suitable user yet (e.g: only work with root)
    2. adduser <your username here>
    3. answer the questions
  5. To let the FTP user change your site:
    1. chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/mysite/html
    2. URL: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/266008

Server specific things

Some server related steps also resulted in some issues. In this specific situation the following happened:

  • MySQL needs to be fed a copy of the existing database. This might result in some character-encoding errors and the widgets bar on the side being empty.
  • Lighttpd is very clean and easy about creating vhosts. The vhost for this site is created by simply creating two folders.
  • DNS settings had to be changed to point to the new URL; altering a CNAME record is enough
  • The server needed some tweaks to not crash on excessive memory usage by PHP-CGI processes (a common problem)
    • i don’t know how these are fixed.

Conclusion

With the above 5 steps from above, i got most of wordpress running again. The server side on this story was either straightforward or performed by my provider; nothing to report on that.

In the end: Migrating sites just is not easy. Every time you think it is, your’e proven wrong in the most obscure blocking annoyances or just by trivialities you can’t fix easily because you’re not system administrator/frequent linux user.

Migrating sites just aint easy, but i’ve done it! With the help of my hoster and some friends (THANKS!)

Beertest

You are probably familiar with those bullshit stories that <your_brand_here> is somehow better/worse than <some_other_brand>. To resolve those issues me and a friend organized a blind beer-test. We found some very nice results. If you don’t know what beer to drink tonight, and you live in Holland: get Palm or Schultenbrau!

Finding beer

The first thing needed was BEER! and lots of it. After visiting several supermarkets (super de boer, albert heijn, aldi, lidl, gall & gall, mitra) we bought whatever beer we could. The only limit was the price per bottle and popularity: none of the beer was over €0,60 per bottle and the beers are available at many supermarkets. That limits this test to cheaper beers and pilseners. After spending €36,44 (ex pfand) we came up with 21 brands with 4 bottles each:

Albert heijn logo Alfa logo Amstel logo bavaria logo Brand logo
€ 0.93/l : Albert € 1.80/l : Common (& Amstel light)

€ 1.53/l : Common

& € 1.73/l : AH

(& Bavaria 0.0)

€ 1.30/l : Common

& € 1.20/l : Common

€ 1.70/l : Common
dommelsch logo euroshopper logo grolsch logo gulpener logo heineken logo
€ 1.53/l : Common € 0.63/l : Common € 1.57/l : Common € 1.83/l : Common € 1.57/l : Common
Hertog jan logo jupiler logo Lindeboom logo Oettinger logo Oranjeboom logo
€ 1.83/l : Common € 2.04/l : Common € 2.00/l : Mitra € 0.81/l : Lidl € 1.30/l : Mitra
Palm logo Pitt logo Schultenbrau Warsteiner logo
€ 1.90/l : Common € 0.67/l : SDB € 0.83/l : Aldi € 1.73/l : Common

In real life it looks something like this:

[singlepic id=353 w=640 h=480 mode= float=]

What’s on the bottles?

Having so much different sorts of beer made me wonder; what do these bottles tell me? Why should I drink them? What makes them so great? Well… the answer was to analyze all of them.

All bottles have at least two labels; formatted according to some standards. The foreign beers do not follow these standards; therefore we do not know what is inside Jupiler and oettinger (ingredient X?). Here are some other things:

  • The most popular colors on beer-bottles are gold, white, black, green and red. Not used are pink and purple,
  • One of the brands looks very new, but has a “since 18XX” label on it. I have no idea what it means,
  • Oranjeboom is a fantasy brand: it is brewed FOR oranjeboom and not BY oranjeboom,
  • Other fantasy brands are: Albert Heijn, Euroshopper, SchultenBrau,
  • Gulpener is the only one with a full-color label and a Environment Label (milieukeur),
  • Palm recommends not to drink beer when you are pregnant,
  • Grolsch and Heineken (2 popular brands in NL, rivaled in the east) are priced exactly the same,
  • The 10% more stamp on Grolsch bottles doesn’t mean a thing; Grolsch always has 33CL bottles,
  • Jupiler is the most expensive, Euroshopper the cheapest

Preparing the bottles

Since this is a blind beer test, we had to think of a way to mask what is served to the testers. All beers come in the same type of bottle. The only deviants are Grolsch, Jupiler and oettinger; so had to be replaced during the test. Anonymization is simple: hold a bottle in water for 5 minutes and the label comes off. After this just tape the bottles and give em a meaningless number: 10, 15, 20, 22, 25, 30, 33, 35, 40, 44, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 77, 80, 85, 88, 90.

[nggallery id=12]

The test

We got about 12 volunteers that where eager to risk their lives. In return they will find out what beer they like best. The results differ a lot from person to person. After the mass-slaughter of beer took place, this is what was left:

[nggallery id=13]

Guesswork on the results

In the world of beer, brand-value and product-experience are the most powerful cards the cheap-brewers have. According to the testers, we could easily replace some of the labels and still not notice the difference. They’re not experienced drinkers, but maybe it says something about the brand value compared to taste.

Did they know what they were drinking? No, only 13 correct guesses out of 73 attempts. With 21 different brands that is pretty nice but there is no significance in all these marks, except for the discovery of Grolsch; which affected its ratings. Apparently some testers found the name and taste of Grolsch great. But the previous table doesn’t help us in getting the value of a brand.

The following table shows the grades given to each brand; whereas most guesses are wrong! Notice the more popular brands are higher rated. The bottom of the list comprises of cheaper brands.

Results

Having seen how the beers are rated (when guessing wrong), its time to see if these values are indeed reflecting the real rating. Now we see unappreciated beers rising to the top: Oranjeboom(11 places), Pitt (10 places), Schultenbrau (7 places). In contrast, higher rated brand to that moved down: Gulpener(12 places), Brand (8 places), Oetinger (10 places).

Conclusion

To decide a winner from these meager test-results is hard. With not enough votes to cast a decision on Warsteiner, Hertog-Jan and Jupiler, they have been removed from the list of winners. The next beer-test should address this issue to give a more fair and balanced judgment. I’ve also got my doubts on Grolsch; if it wasn’t discovered or mistaken it might have another rating. Winners and Losers are listed when having 5 votes; supporting the number one.

Evaluation

Though the fallacies are obvious, this test was a GREAT success. Firstly because there where participants, but also since it was fun to do this. The results might influence some peoples choices when they shop for beer next time.

The total number of participants was 12 and the total number of votes cast 132. (11 votes per victim). That some beers have been voted less is due to the number of beers to test. After ten beers / beer-samples most people could not distinguish what they where drinking.

With an highest average rating of 7.00 it is fair to say; nobody really likes these beers. There are some exceptions here and there, but there is not one beer that actually gets an eight. This I would like to see changed in a next beer test. Then we’ll drink only the best premium imported beer from Belgium and America. If you wonder why America? I’ve got this tip from a member of PINT; if you want to get the best beer; get american, they experiment a lot!

One of the girls in the test liked Alcohol free beer; she rated it highest! Maybe this beer should just be called Girl-Beer with a pink label and a smiling unicorn. The alcohol free beer and light beer where not appreciated by the rest; mostly men. The light beer states that it tastes the same, liars.

Improvements for a next test

  1. Better beers; great beers! Beers that is so good that you are proud becoming an alcoholic.
  2. Ideal serving temperature: we served all slightly too warm. This was a mistake; cold beer is appreciated.
  3. No more than 10 samples per person; otherwise they’ll explode.
  4. More people, and let them rate every sample.
  5. Not everybody likes to drink their sample; get a bucket to dump the remains (beer fans: ENRAGE!)
  6. With 12 people, you can do with 2 bottles of each brand and still have too much.
  7. Pre-factored Excel sheet; doing things by hand increases the error margin.

Prodigy vs Rick Astley mashup

I wondered if i still had it; destroying songs. And, well… i sortof had it. My intention was to create a listen-able mix; so no terror and loud noise. It happened to be Rick Astley and Prodigy; what good can come from that?

The result is not a perfect mix, and not an epic mashup (like dj morgoth did!); its a listenable mix, which plays fine in a random playlist. Enjoy! (and yes, i know its a few milliseconds off a few times.)

Listen!
